Ballroom Dancing

Landon Lewis was introduced to the Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, Rumba, Cha Cha, and East Coast Swing through a social dance class at Baylor University in the spring of 2006. Since then he has continued to learn and dance while also teaching friends and strangers privately and in group settings. He is currently the lead instructor for McLennan Community College’s and Baylor’s continuing education ballroom dance classes and is a regular instructor at USA Dance – Waco’s monthly meetings. He is looking forward to introducing you to and increasing your confidence on the dance floor that has brought him so much joy over the years.

Amanda Frey, LMSW, originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Texas to pursue her masters of social work at the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University. After graduating in 2016, Amanda began working as a behavioral health counselor at a local agency and taking ballroom dance lessons with several instructors in both Temple and Waco. Dances include Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango, and East Coast Swing. Over the past several years, Amanda has assisted Landon Lewis in teaching ballroom dances at McLennan Community College, Baylor University, and USA Dance in Waco while growing her skills and knowledge through continued instruction. Amanda enjoys teaching ballroom dances and watching the confidence of others grow as they move across the dance floor.

Class Descriptions

Tango I

Welcome to Tango! Tango, a popular partner dance that originated in the late 1800s in Buenos Aires and became popular in New York in the early 1900s, is an expressive, vibrant, playful and sometimes sensual dance characterized by a close hold and stealthy movement. In this introductory course, you will learn to identify the music for Tango as well as proper dance frame, techniques for leading and following, floor craft, and dance etiquette. No previous dance experience is required. Registering with a partner is recommended but not required. Recommended dance attire is business casual with comfortable shoes. Ladies are encouraged to wear closed toe shoes that will not slip off while dancing.  This class occurs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday March 1, 8, and 15. Tango II

Cha Cha I

Welcome to Cha Cha! Cha Cha, a Latin dance that originated in Cuba and became popular in the United States in the 1950s, is a lively, fun, flirtatious and energetic dance known for its Cuban hip motion. In this introductory course, you will learn to identify the music for Cha Cha as well as proper dance frame, techniques for leading and following, floor craft, and dance etiquette. No previous dance experience is required. Registering with a partner is recommended but not required. Recommended dance attire is business casual with comfortable shoes. Ladies are encouraged to wear closed toe shoes that will not slip off while dancing. This class occurs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday March 29, April 5, and 12. Salsa I

It is characterized by rolling hip motion and body movement as well as numerous spin and turn patterns. In this introductory course, you will learn to identify the music for Salsa as well as proper dance frame, techniques for leading and following, floor craft, and dance etiquette. No previous dance experience is required. Registering with a partner is recommended but not required. Recommended dance attire is business casual with comfortable shoes. Ladies are encouraged to wear closed toe shoes that will not slip off while dancing. This class occurs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday April 26, May 3, and 10. Salsa II

East Coast Swing I

Welcome to East Coast Swing! East Coast Swing is a rhythm dance often danced to swing music, boogie-woogie and rock and roll. In this introductory course, you will learn to identify the music for East Coast Swing as well as proper dance frame, techniques for leading and following, floor craft, and dance etiquette. No previous dance experience is required. Registering with a partner is recommended but not required. Recommended dance attire is business casual with comfortable shoes.
